Hemorrhoids are when the veins around the anus, which stretch under pressure, become swollen or bulging. Hemorrhoids can occur either internally (veins inside the rectum) or externally (under the skin around the anus). Swelling can be caused by straining to move your bowels, from sitting too long on the toilet, or from other factors, such as pregnancy, obesity or liver disease.
